Orienteering is a cross country running race where you navigate between checkpoints using map and compass. It’s a great off-season race event, and when you come home from a meet you have a highly accurate map of the trails in a nearby forest preserve, useful in later hikes or XC runs. I’ve taken several groups of club members to these meets.

The last race of the Chicago Area Orienteering Club’s fall season is Sunday, at Harms Woods. If you’re interested in trying this out, let me know by email or text by Wednesday night. I can take 3-4 people out in my car. I’ll enter us as a team and teach you the compass and map-reading skills as we cover the Orange course for intermediate racers, mostly at a fast walk or slow jog. The course will be 6-8 km and usually takes an hour to ninety minutes. My email and phone are in the member page.
